Scalp Micropigmentation Pigments for Precise, Fade-Resistant Results

SMP is one of the most technically demanding PMU procedures — and pigment choice is where most results either hold up or fall apart over time. Scalp skin is oily, sun-exposed, and subject to constant environmental stress. A pigment that isn't formulated for that environment fades unevenly, shifts colour as it breaks down, or spreads laterally into the dermis instead of holding a crisp follicle dot. This collection stocks four dedicated SMP pigments from two brands that understand what scalp skin actually does to ink over time.

Solid Ink SMP by Billy DeCola

The Solid Ink SMP line was developed by Billy DeCola specifically for scalp micropigmentation work — not repurposed from a body ink range or adapted from a PMU brow formula. The SMP Set covers six shades on a Fitzpatrick scale: Very Fair (I-II), Fair (II-III), Medium (III-IV), Olive (III-IV), Brown (IV-V), and Dark Brown (V-VI). Each shade is pre-diluted for SMP work, which means you're not guessing at dilution ratios on the scalp — the viscosity and pigment load are already calibrated for follicle dot implantation. The SMP Single bottles let you restock individual shades without buying the full set again.

The Fitzpatrick-based system matters in practice. SMP artists who work across a diverse client base need consistent shade references they can rely on session to session. Having named positions on the scale — rather than arbitrary colour names — makes client matching faster and more repeatable across multiple sessions on the same client.

Perma Blend Micro Dark & Micro Dark Brown

Perma Blend's Micro Dark and Micro Dark Brown are PMU-specific pigments formulated for the scalp environment. Micro Dark is a deep, neutral black — the go-to for clients with dark brown to black hair colour where maximum contrast is needed. Micro Dark Brown has a warmer undertone, sitting in the deep brown range, and is the right call for clients with dark brown hair where a pure black would read too stark against the scalp. Both are 15ml bottles at the same price point, making them practical shelf staples for studios doing regular SMP work rather than occasional procedures.

What to Know When Choosing SMP Pigments

Scalp micropigmentation fades differently from brow or lip PMU. Sun exposure on the scalp is higher than almost anywhere else on the body, and sebum production in the follicle zone breaks down pigment faster than dryer skin areas. A few things that matter when selecting and working with SMP pigments:

Pre-diluted formulas like the Solid Ink SMP line reduce one of the most common variables in SMP work — inconsistent dilution from session to session. If two artists in the same studio are mixing to different ratios, client results won't be consistent. Pre-calibrated pigments remove that variable entirely.

Colour shift is the most common long-term complaint in SMP. Pigments that aren't formulated for scalp skin tend to fade blue or green as they break down — particularly in clients with lighter skin tones where the shift is more visible. Both Solid Ink and Perma Blend formulate specifically to avoid this, which is the primary reason to stay within dedicated SMP lines rather than pulling from general tattoo inks.

Touch-up sessions every 2-4 years are standard for maintaining density and colour accuracy. Having the same pigments available at restock — rather than discontinued or reformulated — is a practical consideration when choosing which brands to build your SMP workflow around.
