The hardest part of a realistic portrait isn't the shadows or highlights — it's the mid-tone. Too warm and it heals orange. Too cool and the skin reads grey and lifeless. Too saturated and it flattens the value structure you built underneath it. OLEG Medium Skin was developed by Oleg Turyanskiy specifically to solve that problem: a mid-range skin tone calibrated for the warm, restrained temperature that heals as living skin across a wide range of complexions.
What "medium skin" actually means here: This shade covers tanned or olive-toned lighter complexions through warm light-brown skin — South Asian, Latin, Mediterranean, mixed complexion subjects, and the warm mid-tones of any portrait where the subject sits in the middle of the skin tone spectrum. On a fairer subject, it functions as the warmth in shadow areas, keeping pale skin from going grey in the mid-values. On a deeper subject within its range, it works as the direct mid-tone base that highlights and shadows are built against.
How it works in a portrait build:
Base layer: Before shadows or highlights go in, Medium Skin establishes the overall skin temperature across the face. Get this wrong — too orange or too grey — and every layer built over it inherits that problem. A portrait base that heals one temperature stop too warm will make every shadow look muddy and every highlight look artificial, regardless of how well the value structure was drawn. Medium Skin is calibrated to sit in the right place so the layers on top of it behave correctly.
Mid-tone fill in large facial areas: Cheeks, forehead, the bulk of a three-quarter face — these areas carry the most visual real estate in a portrait. The colour temperature that fills them sets how the whole face reads. On a portrait of a Mediterranean subject, this is the shade filling the entire mid-value range of the skin, from the brightest area of the cheek to where the shadow starts to build toward the jaw. Too warm in this zone and the subject looks sunburned; too neutral and they look like they haven't been outside in months.
Transition zone between highlight and shadow: The half-light area on a face isn't just a value change — it's a colour shift. Moving from the directly lit forehead down toward the shadow of the brow, the skin picks up warmth as it moves out of the pure highlight and before it enters the shadow. A single skin tone ink can't cover that entire gradient accurately, but Medium Skin handles the critical transition zone — the area where the colour temperature is shifting without there being a hard edge. Applied cleanly in this zone, it prevents the obvious "band" between light and dark that makes a portrait look painted rather than photographed.
Rework and touch-up: When a healed portrait fades and needs refreshing — or when an area of skin has blown out slightly and needs to be brought back — Medium Skin gives a stable base to re-enter without pushing the temperature in the wrong direction. Because it's not aggressively warm or cool, it blends back into healed pigment without creating a visible patch where the new work starts.
Where it sits in Oleg's lineup:
- OLEG Blood Red → warm accent in shadows, lip colour, warm light sources
- OLEG Medium Skin → mid-tone base, skin fill, transition zones ← this
- OLEG Cloud Blue → ambient cool light, background atmosphere, cool shadow tones
