What is the difference between a tattoo power supply and a wireless battery?
A power supply is a desktop unit that plugs into the wall and converts AC current to the DC voltage your machine runs on. It gives you precise, consistent voltage output for the full session without any charge management — you set the voltage, it delivers it. A wireless battery is a rechargeable pack that attaches to the machine or clips onto the grip, removing the cord between the power source and the machine entirely. The tradeoff is straightforward: a power supply gives you unlimited runtime and rock-solid voltage stability; a wireless battery gives you cable-free movement and a cleaner workstation at the cost of managing charge between sessions. Most professional studios run both — power supplies for long body tattoo sessions where consistent voltage over several hours matters, wireless batteries for PMU work where machine mobility and a clean setup around the client's face is the priority.
What is the Critical Connect system and which products use it?
Critical Connect is Critical's proprietary wireless ecosystem — a battery, power supply, and foot switch format that uses a standardised connection and communication protocol across the product line. The Critical Connect V2 Universal Battery, Connect V3 Battery, Critical Tattoo® Universal Battery Dock, Critical Connect Foot Switch, and CXP19 Wireless Foot Switch are all part of the same system. The practical advantage is that the components are designed to work together — the dock charges multiple Connect batteries simultaneously, the foot switch pairs wirelessly with Connect-compatible power supplies without additional setup, and voltage output is consistent across the battery's charge cycle rather than dropping as the battery drains. For studios building around Critical machines, the Connect ecosystem removes most of the compatibility questions that come with mixing brands.
What is the difference between the FK Irons PowerBolt, Lightningbolt, and Airbolt battery lines?
Three lines targeting different use cases. PowerBolt II and II+ are FK Irons' core wireless packs — compact, magnetic connection, the standard daily-driver battery for artists running FK Irons machines. The Lightningbolt line is the extended-range option: higher capacity, available in Single and Double Pack configurations, with a Cheyenne-specific 3.5mm variant for artists running Cheyenne machines who want FK Irons battery performance with native connector compatibility. The Airbolt and Airbolt Mini are the lightest batteries in the FK Irons range — smaller form factor, lower weight on the machine. For PMU work where you're holding the pen for two or three hours straight, the weight difference between a full Lightningbolt Double Pack and an Airbolt Mini is noticeable by the end of a session. The Uni Battery Pack is the cross-machine compatibility option — designed to work across multiple machine brands from a single battery format rather than requiring brand-specific packs.
What does "dual mode" mean on the Mast Halo Power Supply?
Dual mode means the unit functions as both a standard desktop power supply and a battery charger in the same device. For studios running Mast machines, this simplifies the bench setup — one unit handles both wired power delivery during sessions and battery charging between them, rather than needing a separate charger taking up bench space. It's a practical advantage for smaller studios or solo artists where bench real estate is limited and consolidating equipment without sacrificing function matters.
What is the Prime Battery + Magnetic RCA Converter and when do I need it?
The Prime Battery is a wireless battery pack; the Magnetic RCA Converter is the adapter that lets it connect to machines with RCA jacks rather than DC connections. RCA is the older connection standard — a lot of professional machines still use it, and going wireless on an RCA machine normally requires either swapping the machine or buying a brand-specific adapter. The magnetic RCA converter solves that without replacing the machine — it sits between the battery and the machine's RCA jack and handles the connection. Relevant for studios that have high-quality RCA machines they want to keep running wirelessly rather than replacing with newer DC-connection machines just to access wireless batteries.
What is the difference between the Maple Basics Foot Switch and the Maple Metal Premium Foot Switch?
Same function, different build. Both are wired foot switches that connect to a power supply's foot switch jack and let the artist start and stop the machine without touching the power supply. The Basics is a standard plastic housing — reliable, lightweight, the practical choice for a studio that needs a foot switch that works and doesn't need to be anything more. The Metal Premium is a heavier-duty metal housing — it stays put on the floor better under the pedal, the construction holds up longer under daily use, and it's the better choice for high-volume studios where equipment takes more wear. For a single-artist studio doing moderate volume, the Basics is sufficient. For a multi-artist studio running back-to-back sessions every day, the Metal Premium pays for the price difference in durability.
Do wireless tattoo batteries work with all machines or only specific brands?
It depends on the connection format. Most modern wireless batteries use DC connections and work across any machine with a DC jack — the Critical Connect batteries, Bishop B-Charged, Grizzly, and LCD Display Wireless Battery all fall into this category. Some batteries are brand-specific by design: the Cheyenne SOL Nova Unlimited Battery Pack is built for the SOL Nova's specific power draw and connection; the FK Irons Lightningbolt Cheyenne 3.5mm Double Pack is FK Irons' battery adapted for the Cheyenne 3.5mm connection format. The Prime Battery + Magnetic RCA Converter is the solution for RCA-connection machines that don't have a native wireless option. Before buying a wireless battery for a specific machine, checking the connection format — DC, RCA, or proprietary — is the step that prevents incompatibility.
What should I look for in a tattoo power supply for PMU work specifically?
Three things matter more for PMU than for body tattoo work. First, voltage precision at low settings — PMU machines typically run between 5V and 8V, and the difference between 6.0V and 6.5V on a PMU procedure is more consequential than the same difference at higher voltages used in body tattooing. A power supply with fine voltage adjustment increments (0.1V steps rather than 0.5V) gives more control in that range. Second, voltage stability — a supply that delivers exactly what it's set to across the full session, without drift as it warms up. The Critical Atom X and Atom XR are the standard for this. Third, low noise output — some cheaper power supplies introduce electrical noise that causes the machine to run inconsistently at low voltages. For PMU work where you're running at the bottom of the voltage range, a clean power supply makes a measurable difference in how the machine feels and performs.
