Lip blush pigment is formulated specifically for the lip environment — thinner skin, higher vascularity, and constant movement from talking and eating. Regular tattoo inks are built for body skin which is thicker, less reactive, and doesn't have the same moisture and oil exposure. Use a body ink on lips and you risk colour shift, uneven healing, and results that go grey or blue over time. Perma Blend and similar PMU-specific formulas implant at the right depth for lip tissue, fade clean, and don't go muddy as the colour breaks down — which is exactly what separates them from body ink repurposed for facial work.
Skin tone and undertone are the two variables that drive every lip pigment decision. Warm-toned clients — olive, golden, or medium-dark skin — can handle coral, peach, and warm pink shades without the result healing orange. Cool-toned or fair clients need pigments with a clean pink or berry base, otherwise the result heals muddy or pulls an unnatural tone after the first fade. For very deep skin tones, go richer and more saturated than you think you need — pigment appears lighter on darker skin during healing and the final result is always softer than the initial implant. When in doubt, mix. A wide shelf of shades from World Famous and Perma Blend gives you enough range to build a custom match rather than squeezing every client into the same two or three colours.
All three are PMU lip procedures but they produce different results and require different pigment approaches. Lip blush adds a soft flush of colour across the entire lip — the goal is a natural, your-lips-but-better result. Aquarelle is lighter and more diffused, almost watercolour-like, with very sheer pigment saturation and no defined border. Ombre lips build from a darker outer edge to a lighter centre, creating depth and the illusion of volume. For lip blush and aquarelle, lighter and sheerer is almost always the right call on the first session — artists who push saturation too hard on the first visit create more problems than they solve. Ombre lips give you more room to work with deeper shades on the outer border, but the gradient needs to be built gradually rather than packed in on the first visit.
Most lip blush results last between 12 and 18 months before a colour refresh is needed, though this varies significantly by client. Lips fade faster than brows because the skin is thinner, more moist, and exposed to more friction from eating, drinking, and lip products. Clients who follow proper aftercare, avoid oil-based lip products in the first two weeks, and use SPF lip balm consistently tend to hold colour longer. Perma Blend and World Famous both hold their tone as they fade rather than drifting into unwanted colours — which matters more on lips than anywhere else in PMU because the fade cycle is faster and less forgiving.
Yes — and for most experienced lip artists, custom mixing is standard practice rather than the exception. Pulling a single bottle for every client produces predictable, average results. Mixing lets you dial in the undertone, adjust saturation, and land on a shade built for that specific client rather than the closest approximation on the shelf. One thing that catches artists out — mixing within the same brand family works cleanly, mixing across brands doesn't always. Different carrier solutions and particle sizes behave differently on the heal, and what looks right in the cap doesn't always translate once it's in the skin.
Six shades covers most clients when starting out — a sheer nude, a warm pink, a cool pink, a coral, a berry, and a red. The warm and cool pink split is the most important early on because that's where the majority of clients sit and where getting undertone right makes the biggest visible difference in the healed result. A sheer nude is essential for aquarelle work and for pulling down saturation on any shade you're mixing. The red gets less use in natural lip blush work but becomes non-negotiable once you start doing full lip colour or defined lip liner procedures. Start with those six and build the shelf out as you encounter more specific client requests.
